When it comes to deciding how to craft that perfect subject line, there appears to be really only one area to avoid: the subject line of 60 to 70 characters. Marketers refer to this as the “dead zone” of subject length. According to research by Adestra, which tracked over 900 million emails for its report, there is no increase in either open rate or clickthroughs at this 60-to-70 character length of subject line.

The consequences of poor data quality Seventy-three percent of companies have experienced email deliverability
problems in the past year. The most common consequences of poor email deliverability are the inability to communicate with subscribers (41 percent) and poor customer service (24 percent). However, poor email deliverability also results in missed opportunities from lost opens and impressions, as well as cascading negative effects on sender reputation, list health and ultimately sales. These deliverability issues can indicate that an organization is having trouble fulfilling consumer expectations.
Common signs of deliverability issues
There were many signs of deliverability issues reported by the brands in the survey. At the top of the list, brands considered spam trap hits and trouble reaching the inbox as the most common signs.

It is important to spot deliverability issues before they lead to sender reputation damage and possible black listing. Tracking the deliverability of your mailings across time can provide insights into trends and help you identify any specific ISP problems.

• Unique open rates were 17.5 percent in Q3 2015 – up from 16.7 percent in Q3 2014
• Unique click rates remained constant at 2.1 percent in Q3 of both 2014 and 2015
• Thirty-seven percent of brands had significant year-over-year increases in transaction rates and revenue per email
